The importance of foraging and digestive health
In the wild, horses spend 16–18 hours a day foraging. When feed is served in a manger, the natural searching behaviour disappears, often resulting in boredom and the development of stereotypic behaviours.
- Stimulates saliva production: as the horse searches for small feed particles in the mat’s structure, chewing time increases and with it saliva production. Saliva is the horse’s natural buffer against stomach acid.
- Natural searching behaviour: the mat encourages the horse to actively use its muzzle and sense of smell. This “sniffing” lowers the heart rate and has a calming effect through mental stimulation.

Use and care
The activity mat is extremely versatile. It can be filled with anything from chopped hay, lucerne, pellets and muesli to pieces of apple and carrot.
Pro tip: for sensitive or nervous horses, start with “high-value” treats clearly visible on top of the mat, then gradually bury the feed deeper in the structure as the horse grows confident with the product.
Cleaning: the non-porous silicone surface makes it more hygienic than plastic or rubber mats.
